The Link Between Raynaud's Disease and PPH.

Raynaud's Disease - An Overview
Raynaud's disease is characterized by experiencing numbness or coldness in the extremities due to temperature change or stress. Common extremities that are affected include the nose, fingers, toes, and ears. When a person suffering from Raynaud's disease is exposed to cold or experiencing stress, the blood flow to their extremities is reduced due to the narrowing of the veins and blood vessels. This causes the blood to be low in oxygen, turning extremities blue or white and leaving them feeling cold or numb. Although this disease is most commonly found in women, men may experience the effects of Raynaud's disease as well.
Primary Pulmonary Hypertension (PPH)
Primary Pulmonary Hypertension occurs when the blood pressure in the pulmonary artery increases, causing the right side of the heart to work overtime in order to convert the carbon dioxide in the blood to oxygen. If the blood pressure is too high, the blood does not receive the proper amount of oxygen, causing the veins and blood vessels to become even more constricted. If left untreated, the condition could lead to right-sided heart failure. Most recently, cases of PPH have developed after patients began using diet drugs containing Fen-Phen. This dangerous drug caused the heart's veins and vessels to shrink, or constrict, causing blood pressure to rise. Soon after these dangerous health complications were discovered, the FDA pulled the drug from the market; however, for those who had already been affected by the drug, it was too late.
PPH is often treated with the use of beta blockers, ACE inhibitors, diuretics, and oxygen therapy. These treatments attempt to optimize the left side of the heart in order to relieve the right side from over exerting itself. If you have been diagnosed with PPH and believe that your condition was caused by defective weight loss drugs or other medications, it is in your best interest to consult an attorney. A skilled lawyer will know how best to proceed with legal action and can provide you the guidance you need.
The Link
Studies suggest that people with Raynaud's disease are much more likely to develop PPH. The constriction of the veins and blood vessels that occurs due to Raynaud's disease easily lends itself to the development of PPH, whether or not the person with Raynaud's disease has used weight loss drugs containing Fen-Phen. Studies have yet to determine what might occur if a person suffering from Raynaud's disease was to use weight loss drugs containing Fen-Phen, however, the science behind the conditions show that the outcome would not be favorable for the Fen-Phen user.
Liver Disease - Dangerous and Possibly Deadly.

There are dozens of diseases that affect the liver. The two most common causes of liver diseases are viral infections and drugs. Though there are different causes of liver diseases, the clinical signs and symptoms are divided in to two categories.
Due to liver cell damage
Due to obstruction to bile flow
Signs and symptoms due to liver cell damage:
In liver cell damage there is defective synthesis of proteins and defective detoxification. The signs and symptoms include
Jaundice
Dark urine
Vague abdominal pain
Loss of appetite
Fever occasionally
Bleeding
Fluid collection - Late manifestation
Brain, lung and kidney dysfunction in the final stages
Signs and symptoms due to obstruction to bile flow:
In bile flow obstruction there is defective excretion from the liver and defective absorption of fat and fat soluble vitamins from the intestines. The signs and symptoms include
Jaundice
Itching
Bleeding
Pale stools
Dark urine
Vitamin A,D,E and K deficiency
Common Liver Diseases:
Viral hepatitis:
Among the different viruses that affect the liver, the most significant ones are the hepatitis viruses. The types of hepatitis viruses affecting the liver are Hepatitis A, B, C, D and E. Of these, the Hepatitis B infection is the most dangerous. Hepatitis B virus infection is acquired by sexual contact and by blood transfusion. It damages the liver cells and causes minimal bile flow obstruction. There are a few drugs which can control the disease to a certain extent, including lamivudine and interferon. The complications of a hepatitis B infection include cirrhosis and liver cancer. There are however, vaccines available to prevent Hepatitis B and A infections.
Drug induced hepatitis:
Some drugs can cause liver damage either in the normal doses or in higher than normal doses. These drugs can cause liver cell damage or bile flow obstruction, depending on the medication. Some of the common drugs implicated in liver damage are
Anti TB drugs like INH, rifampicin and pyrizinamide
Antibiotics like erythromycin
Anesthetic drugs like halothane
Anti pyretics like paracetamol ( in high doses)
Cirrhosis:
Cirrhosis is condition characterized by irreversible damage to liver cells. The cells are destroyed and are replaced by non-functioning nodules. Some of the causes of cirrhosis are chronic alcohol intake, hepatitis B and C infection, hemochromatosis, Wilson's disease and alpha 1 anti trypsin deficiency. Cirrhosis later leads to cancer liver.
Liver Cancer:
Cancer liver is fatal condition affecting the liver. There are different types of liver cancer. The most common one being the HCC or the hepatocellular carcinoma. HCC is a final complication of cirrhosis.
Some of the other diseases affecting liver are
Tuberculosis
Connective tissue disorders
Blood malignancies
Malaria
Evaluation of patients with liver disease should be directed at
(1) Establishing the etiologic diagnosis
(2) Estimating the disease severity (grading)
(3) Establishing the disease stage (staging).
Diagnosis should focus on the category of liver disease, such as hepatocellular versus bile flow obstruction injury, as well as on the specific etiologic diagnosis. Grading refers to assessing the severity or activity of disease - active or inactive, and mild, moderate, or severe. Staging refers to estimating the place in the course of the natural history of the disease, whether acute or chronic; early or late; pre-cirrhotic, cirrhotic, or end-stage.
Now days we are subjected to stress in the form of man-made pollution and toxins, unhealthy diets, emotional and mental pressures of work, family issu

Whenever possible it is always best to try and treat diseases and disorders in a natural way. However, there are times when medication can become necessary. Fortunately, for sufferers of Crohn’s Disease, there are medications available that are highly effective in limiting the severity and regularity of the disease.
Oftentimes, the first medicines called upon in the fight against Crohn’s Disease are anti-inflammatory drugs. This should come as no surprise as Crohn’s manifests itself as inflammation in the intestinal lining. There are various types of anti-inflammatory medications available. Not every drug is effective for every person. Some of the medications work well for mild cases while others work better for more severe flare-ups.
Corticosteroids are amazing when dealing with severe episodes of Crohn’s Disease. However, since they work by lowering the effectiveness of the immune system the effect is like taking your goalie out in a hockey game. This is why corticosteroids are not normally given to those with mild flare-ups. The side-effects can be severe so medical doctors normally are cautious when prescribing them.
Immunomodulators are not as powerful as corticosteroids, but they work in the same fashion. However, immunomodulators do not come with the side-effects that their close cousins bring. These drugs are great for helping those in remission stay in that stable state.
Since infections have been closely tied to Crohn’s Disease it makes sense that antibiotics are often effective in the good fight. One of the major concerns about using antibiotics is the tendency for them to become less effective as time goes on. The more a person uses a certain antibiotic the greater resistance the bacteria in the body will build up a resistance to it. In addition, using antibiotics can also destroy good bacteria that aid the body in digestion.
Another weapon in the arsenal against Crohn’s Disease is through the use of biologic therapy. This type of therapy is normally reserved for the most severe flare-ups. This form of therapy is like a nuclear bomb to the immune system – minus the radiation. It results in a knock-out of the immune system’s ability to produce TNF-alpha – a protein associated with inflammation.
Surprisingly, antidepressants are also used to battle Crohn’s Disease – but not in the way you are thinking.
Antidepressants do not battle inflammation or eliminate fistulas. Actually, they work on beating back the psychological effects of the disease which can be highly disconcerting. One of the worst symptoms of Crohn’s is depression. The pain, worry, and discomfort of the disease can often drive someone with Crohn’s into deep depression. When depressed, people usually do not respond as well to treatments and the immune system may also be compromised.
There are many medications available for the treatment of Crohn’s Disease. The best plan of action is to visit your doctor and discuss available treatments. Remember, defeating Crohn’s Disease is possible but it will be a lifelong cause.
Alkaline Water Can Take the Sick Out of Sickness.

Now days we are subjected to stress in the form of man-made pollution and toxins, unhealthy diets, emotional and mental pressures of work, family issues, paying the bills ... as well as not getting nearly enough exercise, sunlight, or laughter. Sunlight, we have to have it. People in the Northern climates have higher cancer rates due to less sunlight exposure.
With our busy lifestyles we feel we don't have time to research all the latest diet and health choices. So many times we just go on along with old habits that you don't even realize maybe killing you, one degree at a time. By the time you finally realize that something is wrong, the downward spiral has sometimes gone on for a long time. I had years and years of what was in retrospect, self inflicted arthritis pain and high blood pressure.
Some problems don't always show themselves outwardly. If you have a health issue and are lucky, you'll get symptoms in the early stage. Sometimes we will either, find out too late, ignore the symptoms, or mask them with drugs. Heart disease is a prime example. Did you know the first sign of heart disease, more than half the time, is a heart attack? And that fifty percent of heart attack victims die instantly?
Not very good odds, Huh?
Heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, arthritis and even tooth decay are all acidic related processes that occur over time due to unhealthy lifestyles and eating choices.
Do you know what one condition all of the above things have in common, every single time?? Acidosis, meaning too much acid. Dr. Atkins said, "Of all the major diseases, Diabetes, Hypertension (high blood pressure), Arthritis, and Cancer, acidosis is present." The Mayo Health Clinic has a news letter out, with similar information. Dr. Otto Warburg received the Nobel Prize in Medicine for this discovery 70 years ago! So if they know what causes these diseases, why do we still have them? Answer, there is no money in it if we are well.
What is going on? Why isn't this being preached in every medical school and doctors office? Let's take a guess. There is no profit when the treatment is free, the prevention is free, and this information is free. Most health can be, like they say in the weight loss commercials, "just the cost of food." Well, same here, just knowing which foods to buy, eat and which to avoid, you might become a stranger to your doctor and the pharmacy. Sound too simple? Well, it is not.
We must stay away from harmful chemicals, like soft drinks, I don't know why they call them soft drinks, they kill! Soft drinks are so acidic that it requires 20 cups of alkaline water to neutralize 1 cup of soda. Don't eat flavored chips, caned soups, packaged mixes, that contain MSG and other "weird science" stuff. I know it tastes great but when it makes you or your kids sick, that is a bad after taste.
Here is the bottom line. Being over acidic will make you sick or at the least keep the back door open to sickness or fatal disease. Staying slightly alkaline like our Creator originally made us, promotes health and allows our immune system to kill the bad guys before they can get started. Eating alkaline foods, drinking alkaline water, and (here goes) exercising. Sorry about that exercising part but the systems that flush and remove toxins from our body need us to move around.
One of the reasons that I am writing this article is that when a friend bought a water ionizer, I started drinking his water just for the heck of it. I didn't know anything about acid/alkaline balance. Shortly thereafter two wonderful things happened. One was a painful and oftentimes raw skin rash of 30 years just disappeared. Secondly my arthritic knees stopped hurting. More important than my pain relief is that I no longer have to take those drugs that had lot of harmful side affects.
Wow!, talk about two for one! I plunged into informing myself about this whole business of alkaline/acid balance. I encourage you to investigate the facts also. I am sure you will be the better for it.
Prescription Medications To Treat Acid Reflux Disease.

Pharmaceutical treatment of acid reflux disease or GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease) is probably the most common and there are many prescription medications to treat acid reflux disease out on the market. There are three classes of medications that are used: promotility agents, proton pump inhibitors and H2 blockers.
Both classes of drugs are only available by a prescription form the physician and should be monitored closely for any side effects. Each is used in a different situation with the GED patient.
Promotility agentsThis class of drug is used in patients with a slow or sluggish digestive system. Promotility agents help facilitate the movement of gastrointestinal content through the esophagus, stomach and intestines. When the stomach is empty of food, the chances of reflux into the esophagus are significantly decreased. This patient’s digestive system produces the correct amount of necessary acids, but they are emptied at a slower pace. This causes the acid to remain in the stomach longer or to back up into the esophagus, thus manifesting the symptoms of acid reflux disease.
Drugs in this class include Cisapride (Propulsid) and Metaclopramide oral (Clopra, Maxolon, Octamide, Reclomide, Reglan Oral). Discuss any drugs you are currently using with your doctor. Drug interactions can be severe. Include in this discussion your use of alcohol, ANY illegal drugs, vitamins, minerals or herbal supplements you may take regularly.
Side effects are varied and include diarrhea, constipation, irritability and occasional stomach pain.
Proton pump inhibitorsThese types of prescription medications to treat acid reflux disease are used in patients whose digestive systems overproduce gastric acid. Proton pump inhibitors, or PPI’s, decrease the production of gastric acid(s).
Some drugs in this class are Aciphex, Prevacid, Prilosec and Protonix. Interactions with other drugs can be severe. So, as always, be sure to tell your doctor about any and all other drugs, herbal supplements or anything you may be taking regularly at the time. Some things to avoid taking while using PPI’s include antibiotics, anticoagulants, sedatives, asthma medications, tranquilizers, seizure medications or ulcer treatments.
The side effects of PPI’s vary according to brand, but include itchiness, stomach cramps, dizziness, diarrhea, constipation and excessive gas or flatulence. Once you begin taking PPI’s, you should closely monitor the appearance of any side effects and notify your physician immediately if they occur.
H2 BlockersH2 blockers work in the same way as PPI’s in that they block histamines (H2) to decrease the production of gastric acids. This type of drug was widely used until the development of proton pump inhibitors, which have a more pronounced and long-term effect.
H2 blockers are used to treat moderate GERD and can help heal mild to moderate esophagitis. Some common H2 blockers are Axid, Pepcid, Tagamet, and Zantac. Before you begin taking H2 blockers, check with your physician as drug interactions and side effects vary with each drug. There are more of these interactions and side effects to consider with H2 blockers.
If you are suffering the effects of GERD, you probably will need one of these prescription medications to treat acid reflux disease and to help your body regulate the digestive system. Consult your physician and let him know if you are taking anything else BEFORE you start on any of these medications. Every person is different, so which drug is right for you is subject to discussion between you and your doctor.
Parkinson's Disease Drug-Gambling Addiction Trial Results in $8.2 Million Judgment For Plaintiff.

In August, a man who blamed the Parkinson's Disease drug Mirapex for his gambling addiction was awarded $8.2 million in his lawsuit against the drug's maker, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals Inc. It was considered a bellwether case, and was being watched by many to gauge the strengths and weaknesses of the other Mirapex lawsuits. Now, many legal experts believe that there is a good chance similar Mirapex lawsuits will be successful.
Mirapex belongs to a class of drugs known as dopamine agonists, which have long been suspected of causing compulsive behavior. Mirapex was approved by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 1997 to treat Parkinson's, and in 2006, it was approved as a treatment for Restless Leg Syndrome. Other dopamine agonists include Parlodel, Dostinex, Requip, Apokyn and Neupro.
Parkinson's Disease occurs because of a lack of the neurotransmitter dopamine in certain areas of the brain. Dopamine works in the brain's movement and coordination centers, and it is also involved in the brain's pleasure response by reinforcing behaviors that provide enjoyment -- including drinking, drugs, sex and gambling.
For many Parkinson's Disease patients, Mirapex provides much needed relief from tremors. But some doctors say Mirapex and other dopamine agonists may also encourage impulsive behaviors. In some patients, Mirapex over-activates the pleasure centers in the brain. The biochemical reaction that Mirapex induces might cause some people to experience a "rush" when they are anticipating a reward or excitement.
Several studies have found a link between Mirapex and similar drugs and compulsive behaviors. According to a one presented in June at the International Congress of Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders conference in Chicago, more than 13 percent of 3,090 Parkinson's patients had a problem with compulsive gambling, buying, sex or binge-eating. People who were taking either Mirapex or Requip had a two- to three-times greater chance of having one of the four impulse-control disorders.
While other studies have found a similar association between, perhaps the most dramatic evidence of linking Mirapex to these behaviors is the fact that in most cases, the behavior stops once the drug is discontinued. Unfortunately, many people who were experiencing these side effects had no idea that Mirapex might be behind their odd behavior. Despite having evidence that Mirapex caused impulse-control behaviors from clinical trials in the 1990s, the maker of the drug did not issue warnings about the problem until 2005.
The impulse control problems experienced by Mirapex users have resulted in bankruptcies, broken marriages, depression and even suicide. As a result, more than 200 lawsuits have been filed against Boehringer Ingelheim for by Mirapex patients for its failure to warn users about the drug's association with impulse-control disorders.
Gary Charbonneau was one of those patients. Charbonneau, who began taking Mirapex in December 1997, said he suffered from a gambling addiction from March 2002 to February 2006. In that period of time, he gambled away $260,000. The case was heard in the US District Court in Minneapolis, where hundreds of Mirapex lawsuits have been consolidated.
Charbonneau's lawsuit not only claimed that Mirapex caused his gambling problem, but that the drug's makers, Pfizer and Boehringer Ingelheim, knew about its potential to cause compulsive behavior, but did not issue any warnings, or take steps to investigate the true scope of the problem.
Boehringer Ingelheim, and Pfizer Inc., which marketed the drug in U.S. had argued that hey were not liable for Charbonneau's addiction because the FDA had not asked for any label changes, despite reports that Mirapex was causing compulsive behavior. The companies also claimed that Charbonneau's gambling problems had preceded his use of Mirapex, and continued after he stopped taking the drug.
The jury that heard the case was not convinced by the defendants' arguments. Charbonneau was awarded all of his gambling losses, along with $7.8 million in punitive damages. However, Boehringer Ingelheim and Pfizer are expected to appeal the decision.
Charbonneau's case was one of three "bellwether" cases that are scheduled to be heard back-to-back in the Multidistrict Litigation. The trials will be used by the other potential Mirapex plaintiffs, as well as the defendants, to assess their chances for success in other lawsuits.
Is Drug Addiction And Alcohol Addiction A Disease?

Is drug and alcohol addiction a matter of will power, choice or is it a disease? Despite matters of health, and the fact that nobody expects drug addiction and alcohol addiction to happen as a result of their use, it does. Why?
Let's examine these questions in detail.
First it's important to understand the cycle of addiction. When a person takes things like alcohol or drugs, these substances alter the chemical composition of the brain. Alcohol and drugs causes the brain to release endorphins, the pleasure causing agents. As a result the person loses all his inhibitions and feels "high". The process of addiction is a sine wave phenomenon with sharp peaks and troughs. As the intoxication wee ras off, a feeling of being let down or depression can occur. He starts craving for the next fix since his body demands it. The focus is on just a single thing, the next high or rush. He spends all his energy in getting the drug or the alcohol and nothing else matters.
In other words addiction is not a behavior issue, In fact it is a disease. Once the person is addicted, refusal skills or willpower weakens, and use becomes almost a conditioned reflex.
Who are at risk for addiction? Almost everyone is at a risk; however some people are at a greater risk of addiction than the others. A lot of factors come into play as far as addiction is concerned:
1. Genetics: When drug or substance abuse runs in the family, then there is a greater chance of the person getting addicted since the chemically altered nature of the brain may be hereditary.
2. Low self-esteem: low self esteem or depression tendency may also lead to addiction. There is a simple reason for this. People who have low self confidence or low self-esteem may be searching for easy ways to feel good. Drugs/alcohol gives them that high, which makes them feel that they are better than anyone else.
3. Emotional factors: There is a high risk for addiction for people who have not had their needs for love met, or known unconditional love. Such children want to be needed and loved, which they do not find at home and hence seek in peers. Most of the times, just to please their friends, they get into drugs or alcohol and oft time develops an addiction.
Addiction is a disease that ruins a capable and intelligent human being. This disease needs treatment like all the other diseases. The catch in this situation is that the patient is unaware of his problem and may even deny it. Therefore it is crucial to handle the patient with understanding and love. With the right treatment addiction to drugs and alcohol can be cured and the persons' life put back in order.
Drug Resistant Diseases - Taming of the Shrew.

Exceedingly detested but true, when diseases once treatable cease to respond to pharmaceutical drugs, the consequences can be devastating. However, things could change if the scientists succeed in successfully testing a newly developed mechanism to thwart drug resistance.
It's impossible to talk of drug resistance and not mention the super bug, "Staphylococcus aureus." Often it's the bacteria that come to ones mind when you think drug resistance, but sometimes it can be other pathogens such as cancer cells. However, now researchers seem to be attempting to bluff these pathogenic cells to get potent medicine inside them, thus spelling their doom.
How The New Process Works?
One way by which resistance develops is when the pathogenic cells suddenly become clever (and cunning and @#$) and don't let medicines seep through their skin and act against them. But taking a lead from nature the Stanford University have developed a method to combat this common form of resistance.
The solution formulated by scientists centers around the compound "Arginine," an amino acid (amino acids are the building blocks of proteins) abundantly found in cells. As against other substances, when arginine rich compounds try to enter a cell they are welcomed, even by resistant cells.
So now the tactic used entails cloaking the therapeutic compound with Arginine, hence facilitating its entry into the target cell. Once the Arginine bounded medicine gets inside it only needs to broken apart from Arginine (the cloak) to begin its action. And this is achieved by glutathione, a molecule naturally present inside a cell. After the temporary and weak medicine---Arginine complex is broken down, the pathogenic cell has no choice but to succumb.
For now the mechanism has been successfully tested with the ovarian cancer drug "Paclitaxel," however it can have applications in bacterial diseases as well, viz. multi-drug resistant tuberculosis, the scientists have suggested.
Another promising find of the study was that the scientists can control even the rate at which the medicine is release by tweaking "Arginine" just a little bit. And that's not all, a cancer therapy based on this technique even promises a treatment with lesser negative side effects that go along with chemotherapy.
While cancer drugs are just one example, come to think of if most drug resistant diseases can be tackled in this manner, health would be restored to millions who suffer due to this type of drug resistance.
Pleural Mesothelioma Symptoms.

The earlier symptoms of malignant pleural mesothelioma are very similar to those experienced with other lung conditions, such as pneumonia or lung cancer. Symptoms also tend to present very gradually, and may therefore go unnoticed for a while. Breathlessness is one of the early and more common symptoms of pleural mesothelioma. This may present as a recent onset of shortness of breath, or a recent increase in shortness of breath. Breathlessness may be caused by a buildup of fluid (pleural effusion) in the space surrounding the lungs. This buildup of fluid may be removed periodically to make breathing easier. Certain substances may also be introduced into the space between the pleural membranes where fluid collects. These substances cause an inflammatory reaction in the pleural membranes, causing them to fuse together and thereby preventing the formation and collection of more fluid.
The thickening of the pleural membranes due to the growth of cancer cells also restricts lung function and contributes to breathlessness. Sometimes, this thickened tissue may require surgical removal to restore some lung function. The removal process is called decortication or pleurectomy.
Malignant mesotheliomas tend to spread fairly rapidly to other parts of the body, and this spread can result in additional symptoms. When pleural mesothelioma spreads to the chest wall and other tissues in the chest, it can result in severe pain. Even before the cancer spreads, chest pain, particularly in the lower chest and side, may be experienced. Chest pain tends to become progressively worse as the cancer spreads. Severe pain may be treated with strong pain-relieving drugs or with radiotherapy. When pleural mesothelioma spreads to the lungs, symptoms that are typically seen in lung cancer, such as hoarseness and coughing up of blood, may be present.
As with other cancers, the effect of pleural mesothelioma is widespread. The increased metabolism caused by cancer cells results in fever, weight loss and fatigue.
Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma Survival Rate.

Malignant pleural mesothelioma is the most common type of malignant mesothelioma. Many factors may be involved in determining the survival rate for this aggressive cancer; some are better understood than others. Estimates of median survival time range from one to two years; survival depends on underlying factors such as the type and extent of spread of the mesothelioma. Only seven percent of people with this cancer survive to five years after diagnosis, but this outlook is gradually improving with some promising experimental treatments. Some people live well beyond five years from the time of diagnosis.
In general, younger age at diagnosis, absence of weight loss and limited loss of lung function are associated with chances for increased survival. Stage I mesotheliomas, which have not spread to the lymph nodes or adjacent tissues and organs, also carry the best prognosis. The type of cell the cancer is comprised of can also affect survival. The epithelioid cell type has the best prognosis, the mixed or biphasic cell type the next best prognosis, and the sarcomatoid cell type the worst prognosis. The majority of malignant pleural mesotheliomas are of the epithelioid cell type.
Because this cancer takes so long to manifest, people are usually diagnosed at an older age and with more advanced disease, potentially worsening the prognosis and the treatment options available. The more aggressive the treatment, the better the outcome may be, but in cases with cancer that has spread to other parts of the body, chemotherapy may be the only alternative. New drugs, such as the combination of Alimta with Platinol, have been shown to improve survival in malignant mesothelioma patients whose only option is chemotherapy. A number of experimental treatments, such as immunotherapy and biotherapy, are currently being evaluated in clinical trials.
Peritoneal Mesothelioma Survival Rates.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma is a cancer of the abdomen lining caused due to prolonged exposure to asbestos. Thousands of lawsuits are handled every year dealing with the issue of peritoneal mesothelioma and its effects. Symptoms of mesothelioma may not appear until 30 to 50 years after exposure to asbestos. Shortness of breath and pain in the chest due to an accumulation of fluid in the pleural space are often symptoms of pleural mesothelioma Other symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include loss of appetite, nausea, and abdominal swelling. Fluid commonly accumulates in the abdominal cavity causing the swelling and pain. The symptoms can become quite serous over time, as the swelling will exert great force on surrounding organs and lead to great pain.
If diagnosed at an early stage, than there are chances of survival, depending upon on how advanced the cancer is at the time of the diagnosis. Treatment with radiation or chemotherapy and early diagnosis can be of great help. In fact, these treatments can help a patient to survive for a long time. It is often true that if the cancer is found early and treated aggressively, almost half of the patients whose cancer is found early reach the two-year mark and about 20% survive five years. For peritoneal mesothelioma, patients are often informed that they won’t be able to live for more than one year. But peritoneal mesothelioma specialists, working in leading cancer centers throughout the world, often report better statistics than this, based upon the clinical trials that they are carrying out.
Mesothelioma Treatment Costs.

The costs of treating malignant mesothelioma are extremely high; estimates range from $150,000 to over $ 1 million. The most commonly used anti-cancer drugs used to treat malignant mesothelioma are AlimtaÃ’ and cisplatin. The combined cost of these drugs for one treatment cycle is approximately $4,100; multiple treatment cycles may be required, and a cure is not assured. In fact, even with aggressive treatment, the median survival of a patient after diagnosis with malignant mesothelioma is between one and two years.
Some mesothelioma treatment costs may be covered by health insurance, Medicare or Medicaid. However, many people may not have health insurance or be eligible for Medicaid or Medicare. Information on sources of financial assistance can be obtained from the social services units of hospitals, the Cancer Information Network and the American Cancer Society.
When occupational exposure to asbestos can be proven, patients with malignant mesothelioma may be able to seek damages from former employers through lawsuits. While there is a current cap of $1.1 million on the total amount that can be awarded to a single individual in a mesothelioma lawsuit, this cap is considered insufficient by some mesothelioma treatment advocates. They say that better diagnostic tests, combined with the availability of more effective treatment, means more people with malignant mesothelioma are diagnosed at a younger age and live longer. Increased survival is associated with increased treatment costs.
Some novel mesothelioma treatment options are being investigated in clinical trials. These include more affordable options such as immunotherapy, or expensive options such as gene therapy. In gene therapy, specific materials injected into the patient attack the genes in cancer cells, ultimately killing them. A single session of gene therapy may cost between $150,000 and $950,000. Clinical trials may cover some costs of treatment. However, certain trials only enroll people who have been recently diagnosed and who have not begun any other type of treatment.
Traditional Mesothelioma Treatment.

Traditional mesothelioma treatments are the standard treatments for malignant mesothelioma, which is a cancerous disease affecting the mesothelial cells in tissues of the human body. Treatment methods of mesothelioma diverge due to a number of factors, such as the location of the cancer cell, the stage of the disease, and a patient’s personal choices. In general, traditional mesothelioma treatment includes surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy, or different combinations of these three treatments.
Surgery or surgical treatment is employed to either remove the cancer from the affected organ or alleviate pain. Sometimes, it may be impossible to remove all parts over which the affliction has spread; however surgical intervention may help in reducing pain. Two major types of surgical treatments include “pneumonectomy” and “palliative procedures.”
Pneumonectomy involves the surgical removal of a lung. This method comes in two varieties, “traditional pneumonectomy” in which the diseased lung is removed, and “extrapleural pneumonectomy” wherein the afflicted lung as well as part of the pericardium, diaphragm or parietal pleura on the same side of the chest, are removed.
In palliative procedures, treatment used does not heal mesothelioma, but eases pain and controls symptoms. “Thoracentisis” and “pleurectomy/decortication” are among the various palliative procedures. In thoracentisis, a needle is put into the chest cavity, either to drain fluid for diagnosis, or to drain fluid to relieve pain. Pleurectomy/decortication removes the pleura so as to lessen pain or prevent the recurrence of pleural effusion.
Chemotherapy is another important traditional mesothelioma treatment used to kill cancer cells by injecting medicines intravenously into the ailed areas. This method also involves the use of drugs to keep cancer cells from multiplying. Side effects can be quite severe in this treatment because chemotherapy may even destroy healthy cell in addition to the cancer cells. Nausea, vomiting, fatigue, hair loss, constipation, decreased appetite and mouth sores are some of its side effects.
Radiation treatment (radiation therapy or radiotherapy) uses high-energy rays (like x-rays) to damage mesothelioma cancer cells in a localized area. Although healthy cells may also be affected, they can repair themselves more effectively. The side effects of radiotherapy as a traditional mesothelioma treatment include fatigue, hair loss, skin irritation, nausea and difficult breathing.
Asbestos and the Risk of Peritoneal Mesothelioma.

Asbestos is a natural mineral that was once used in the construction and home improvement industries. It was put on ceilings when it was mixed with aertex, it was used to make surfaces semi flame resistant and it was also mixed with cement as it is very strong. At one point asbestos was seen as a revolution for these industries as it was just so versatile - it was also deadly. No one realised at the time that every time they were exposed to asbestos that they were taking their life in their hands and putting themselves in grave danger. Asbestos is now banned but its legacy lives on in the thousands of people who are feeling the after effects of being exposed to it over the years.
Exposure to asbestos is directly related to certain types of cancer, including peritoneal mesothelioma which is cancer of the membranes in the abdominal cavity. Peritoneal mesothelioma is the second rarest form of mesothelioma and each year it is responsible for around 20% of the cases of diagnosed mesothelioma. As exposure to asbestos is the only known cause of peritoneal mesothelioma there are two main ways that doctors believe that it can actually reach the abdominal wall. One way is through the digestion of asbestos fibres which is actually easy than most might think. Once in the digestive system the asbestos fibres get stuck in the peritoneum and over time this can result in peritoneal mesothelioma. The second way that asbestos gets to the abdomen is through the lymph nodes and lungs when asbestos is inhaled. In some cases pleural mesothelioma will result in peritoneal mesothelioma ad the asbestos moves through the lungs and into the abdominal cavity if left untreated and undiagnosed for some months.
Suspicion of peritoneal mesothelioma is usually made when a patient exhibits signs such as pain in the abdomen, chest or stomach and many suspect hernias are actually created by a tumour caused by peritoneal mesothelioma. Often a misdiagnosis that does not include peritoneal mesothelioma can be made and this can have severe repercussions on the life expectancy of a patient. It is usual for someone who is thought to have peritoneal mesothelioma to have to undergo many tests to get a correct diagnosis and these tests are imaging scans and tissue biopsies.
Patients who are found to have peritoneal mesothelioma do not have a good prognosis. However if a diagnosis of peritoneal mesothelioma is made early enough they could have surgery to remove the disease and some cases it can extend a patient's life span for a few more years. If surgery is not an option then chemotherapy or radiotherapy can help although there is no guarantee that this will make much of a difference. It is essential that a person with peritoneal mesothelioma gets the right kind of treatment for any pain that they experience so that they are as comfortable as they can be. Peritoneal mesothelioma, like the other forms of mesothelioma is highly unpleasant and hard to live with.
Malignant Mesothelioma Diagnosis.

The most critical form of mesothelioma is the malignant form. Known as malignant mesothelioma, the primary causal factor is asbestos infection. According to the US National Cancer Institute, "Malignant mesothelioma is a disease in which cancer (malignant) cells are found in the sac lining the chest (the pleura), the lining of the abdominal cavity (the peritoneum) or the lining around the heart (the pericardium)."
Mesothelioma can be classified into three types – pleural mesothelioma, peritoneal mesothelioma and pericardial mesothelioma. Pleural mesothelioma refers to a cancer of the lining of the lung (pleura), peritoneal mesothelioma refers to a cancer of the abdominal cavity (peritoneum) lining, and pericardial mesothelioma is a cancer that occurs in the lining that surrounds the heart (pericardium). The subtypes of mesothelioma are of three basic types, one very aggressive, one least aggressive, and one lying between the two extremes.
Malignant mesothelioma can be diagnosed through several imaging techniques. These imaging techniques enable physicians to assess mesothelioma. Once mesothelioma is suspected, patients are advised to undergo several tests, like X-ray, Computed Tomography (CT) scan, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans, and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging. The physician may also like to undertake special mesothelioma tests like thoracoscopy, peritoneoscopy and biopsy.
Learning about the stage of mesothelioma is a critical factor that helps physicians to decide the treatment plan. If the cancer is confined to the pleura, mesothelioma is considered localized. If the cancer spreads beyond the pleura and to other parts of the body such as the lungs, abdominal cavity, lymph nodes and the chest wall, mesothelioma is considered to be in an advanced stage.
The oft used and the oldest system for determining the stages of mesothelioma is the Butchart System. The Butchart System is based on the extent of the primary tumor mass available in a patient. This system divides mesothelioma into four stages. The TNM system, a slightly advanced system over the Butchart System, determines staging through variables of tumor in mass and the spread, the lymph node involvement and metastasis. However, the latest system is known as the Brigham System, where staging is done as per the respectability and lymph node involvement. In spite of such modern techniques, a definitive diagnosis of mesothelioma still remains possible through fluid diagnosis and tissue biopsy
An Introduction To Mesothelioma Lawsuits.

Federal law in the US entitles individuals diagnosed with mesothelioma to file a lawsuit against the errant company or companies. Mesothelioma, being a deadly form of cancer, ruins the prospects of victims and their families. This effectively means that mesothelioma lawsuits are a necessity – something that can mitigate the sufferings of the family.
Mesothelioma lawsuits are complex, and hence require the services of expert mesothelioma lawyers or law firms. Since the disease has an extremely long latency period, the manifestation of the disease can come after several decades of actual exposure to asbestos. For instance, in several cases it was found that people now being diagnosed with mesothelioma were exposed to asbestos thirty to forty years ago, or even before that. Consequently, mesothelioma lawsuits become extremely challenging, as they call for extraordinary efforts on the part of the lawyers or law firms. Mesothelioma lawsuits often result in millions of dollars for the victims.
While dealing with mesothelioma, it is pertinent to remember a few basic things about mesothelioma lawsuits. Perhaps the most important is the fact that mesothelioma patients should file their lawsuits almost immediately upon diagnosis. This is because many states across the US have a time limit for filing mesothelioma lawsuits.
Mesothelioma lawsuits are a boon for ailing family members or dependents when the earning member is diagnosed with the cancer. The lawsuit seeks to offer a secure future to the dependent family members, and also helps them to treat the patient. In case mesothelioma is diagnosed too late and the patient passes away, the regulations are slightly different. However, even in this case, it is advisable for family members to file the lawsuit as soon as possible in order to realize a successful settlement.
Individuals can also file a lawsuit if they have respiratory problems and are a close family member of someone who worked with asbestos. It is possible that individuals working with asbestos may have carried asbestos dust and fibers to their homes, thereby infecting other members. Although it is understood that the patients identified with mesothelioma may not come out of the painful experience of parting with their near and dear ones, lawsuits often help by mitigating the pain to an extent by providing a secure future
An Introduction To Mesothelioma Treatment.

Conventional therapies are of little use in Mesothelioma Treatment. The survival time after diagnosis is around 6 to 12 months. The spread of malignant cells to the underlying tissue and other organs in the pleural cavity, the pleural cavity encouraging local metastasis by exfoliated cells, the long inactive period between asbestos exposure and development of the disease are among the chief reasons for the malignancy not responding to treatments.
Surgery for mesothelioma may be performed to relieve pain and discomfort caused by the tumor or to cure the patient. Palliative surgery is typically done in cases where the tumor has already spread beyond the mesothelium and is difficult to completely remove or in cases where the patient is too ill to tolerate a more extensive operation. Curative surgery is offered when the patient is in good health and the tumor is thought to be localized and can be completely removed.
Mesothelioma is highly resistant to radiation therapy and chemotherapy. These treatments are mainly used relieve symptoms due to tumor metastasis. The Food and Drug Administration approved in February 2004 the use of pemetrexed, brand named Alimta, for the treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma has reacted positively to certain treatments using immunotherapy. The attempt to boost immune response using intrapleural inoculation of Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) had not effect in Mesothelioma treatment and the patients who underwent this treatment had several side effects. Immunotherapy involving interferon alpha has been able to reduce tumor by 50% in certain patients. The side effects of this treatment were minimal.
Heated intraoperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy, a procedure developed by Paul Sugarbaker at the Washington Cancer Institute is a breakthrough in Mesothelioma treatment. He is able to remove a larger amount of tumor by the direct administration of a chemotherapy agent in the abdomen. In this treatment, high concentrations of selected drugs can be administrated into the abdominal and pelvic surfaces. The fluid used is perfused for 60 to 120 minutes and then drained out. When the drug is heated to 40 to 48 degree Celsius, it increases the penetration of drugs into tissues. The heating also damages the malignant cells.
New treatment approaches such as gene therapy are under clinical trials. Age, contributing health problems, or advanced state of disease may make aggressive treatment impossible. In these cases, palliative care which treats the symptoms is ideal.
Mesothelioma Treatment Forums.

Mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer that is caused by exposure to asbestos, a mineral mostly found in various industrial products. It is believed that many people, who are afflicted by mesothelioma, are not even aware of it. There are many local and national mesothelioma treatment forums that conduct free tests on people showing symptoms of the disease. Mesothelioma patients seek immense psychological and social support through such treatment forums.
There are many people who show significant symptoms of mesothelioma and are advised to take proper treatment. Nevertheless, in prevailing conditions of poverty, ignorance or inaccessibility to good medical treatment, many patients are deprived of a normal treatment that could reduce symptoms or relieve the pain caused by mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma treatment forums extend their help to patients of endometriosis of all age groups. They provide information on the disease and its hazardous consequences, if left untreated. Patients are updated about recent medical developments pertaining to the treatment of the disease and are recommended, new techniques and medicines. Many forums also help patients to get connected with renowned physicians from around the globe.
Mesothelioma treatment forums are a platform for patients in receiving mental support that helps them cope with the disease. The forums also brief family members and friends of patients about the various stages of the disease. They are advised on precautions that can be taken to minimize the effects of the disease. Many patients with initial symptoms of mesothelioma also participate in these forums to gain information about the disease, shared during interactive educational presentations on mesothelioma.
In addition to the national forums, there are many online support and chat forums that educate people about mesothelioma and share the experiences of others who are afflicted with the disease. The key objective of these forums is to provide sound ways of medical treatment to patients in different corners of the world. They help enlighten patients and their relatives/ friends about the seriousness of the disease and the benefits of timely treatment.
Radical Mesothelioma Treatment.
The challenge posed by mesothelioma is very high and doctors and researchers are on the look out for new options of treatment. Radical mesothelioma treatments, also referred as experimental treatment, are new advancements in the treatment of mesothelioma. Sometimes it is used along with traditional treatments and sometimes alone. Since these are new treatments, the effectiveness of treatment and side effects are unknown.
Patients who are interested in trying radical mesothelioma treatments can get involved in a clinical trial or clinical studies. Clinical trial is a rigorously controlled test of a new medicine or a new invasive medical device on human subjects. In the United States, experimental mesothelioma treatments are conducted under the direction of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) before being made available for common clinical use.
Gene therapy, immunotherapy, photodynamic therapy, and complementary and alternative medicine are some of the radical mesothelioma treatments. Gene therapy is the modification or replacement of missing or damaged genes in the cancer cells of a mesothelioma patient with functional ones. The treatment methods differ according to the types of genes used and the methods used to inject them into tissues.
Immunotherapy is the treatment employing natural substances which the body uses to fight infection and disease. This treatment is generally used along with other treatments to strengthen the mesothelioma patient’s immune system. In this procedure, artificial immune system proteins are sometimes injected to stimulate a patient’s normal ability to fight sickness. Photodynamic therapy involves a drug which is stimulated by a photosensitizing agent.
Complementary and alternative medicine methods are used in combination with other treatments or alone to treat or alleviate cancer symptoms holistically. These methods are not considered as valid by many in the medical profession; however numerous patients and alternative healers think these practices are very effective. Acupuncture, herbs, homeopathy, therapeutic massage and Eastern medicines are some of the alternative options

Asbestos Mesothelioma Lawsuit.

Mesothelioma is a malignant tumor of the mesothelium caused by exposure to asbestos fibers. There is some important information one should be aware of if he is considering pursuing an asbestos mesothelioma lawsuit. Prior to pursuing a lawsuit, he should seek advice from a reputable mesothelioma lawyer for a better understanding of mesothelioma law. A mesothelioma lawsuit can also provide one with adequate compensation that will help cover his legal, medical, and ongoing expenses related to the mesothelioma cancer.
Previously, due to exposure to an asbestos related substance, there have been cases in which the mesothelioma cancer sufferers have received thousands of dollars in compensation for their diagnosis of mesothelioma. Recently, mesothelioma lawsuits help the person who has developed with mesothelioma by providing various benefits. Lawsuits have included people who have been exposed to asbestos related substances through their work environment, and companies are required to compensate their present or previous employees for non-disclosure of the risks involved with handling asbestos and related substances.
Mesothelioma law works on the premise that this exposure to an asbestos or related substance without prior knowledge has lead to the injury, and sometimes death of the asbestos mesothelioma sufferer. Beginning your lawsuit early will ensure that you acquire adequate compensation in time to help with your medical expenses and ongoing support and treatment. In order to begin a lawsuit, you will need to find an experienced mesothelioma attorney or lawyer, and they can usually be found at reputable law firms.
It is important that you disclose all information surrounding your asbestos mesothelioma cancer, including your diagnosis and prognosis to your mesothelioma attorney or lawyer, as this will help him to form a solid lawsuit for your case.
You should also try to provide your attorney or lawyer with details pertaining to the period in which your exposure occurred, who you were working for at the time, and any details regarding whether you had prior knowledge of your exposure. All this information is considered to be important and will ensure that your mesothelioma attorney or lawyer will be successful in your mesothelioma lawsuit. One is always recommended to seek legal assistance as soon as the person has diagnosed with mesothelioma.
New Mesothelioma Treatment.

Several new mesothelioma treatments are being developed. Researches mostly revolve around developing new treatments or improving upon the traditional treatments. Hopes are high for mesothelioma patients as new chemotherapy agents and combinations of agents are giving improved results.
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a new mesothelioma treatment based on the theory that single celled organisms die when exposed to certain frequency of light. For this certain photosensitive drugs are administered intravenously. In a couple of days, the drug concentrates on the diseased cell and destroys it. Skin sensitivity, nausea and vomiting are some of the side effects.
Immunotherapy, sometimes called biological therapy, is another new method in mesothelioma treatment. In this method, the immune system of body is used to treat the disease. The body’s ability to treat itself might be hampered due to certain reasons. Immunotherapy tries to rejuvenate the immune system and there by improving the natural immune system which is the most effective way to combat any disease. The therapy also tries to repair immune systems that are faulty. Biological response modifiers (BRMs) are the substances used in immunotherapy. BRMs naturally occur in the body but it can now be prepared in laboratory and is found to give the same effect as the natural ones.
Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) is new treatment used to improve local control of mesothelioma. In this radiation doses can be administered to tumor without causing damage to nearby normal cells. Treatment at the DNA level is an important breakthrough in science. Gene Therapy tries to correct or replace abnormal genes. Replacement gene therapy and knockout gene therapy are two main types of gene therapy. In replacement gene therapy the mutated or missing gene which causes mesothelioma is replaced. In knockout gene therapy, the gene responsible for tumor is completely eliminated. With more and more information regarding genes being unfolded, gene therapy treatment has a promising future in the treatment of mesothelioma.
Treatments which use some combinations of surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy, called multimodality therapy, are being researched upon. Heated intraoperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy and use of pemetrexed drug, brand named Alimta, are some of the new developments in the treatment of mesothelioma.
What You Should Know About Mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that affects the mesothelium, the thin layer of membrane that protects many of our body's internal organs. Although the disease is rare, the cause of mesothelioma is singular, asbestos. Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that consists of fibrous crystals that can become lodged in the lungs when inhaled if the mineral is damaged and then becomes airborne.
The history of asbestos
Asbestos was widely used in the manufacturing and construction industry during the 20th century because of its: • Heat resistant nature • Widespread availability • Strength • Insulating properties • Flexibility
The dangers of asbestos have been researched for many years but it wasn't until the last twenty years or so that legal action was taken to ban its continued use and to prevent potential exposure in existing materials and buildings.
The symptoms of mesothelioma Asbestos exposure causes severe medical injuries that may not show up for decades. Individuals who are in constant contact with asbestos such as construction workers, factory employees, and miners are more susceptible to asbestos exposure than others and can even cause second exposure to their families and others when they come into contact with them.
Common symptoms of mesothelioma include: • Shortness of breath • Coughing • Swelling of the face and arm • Weight loss • Nausea • Hernias
Seek medical attention immediately
If you believe that you been exposed to asbestos and may be suffering from the symptoms of mesothelioma then you should seek immediate medical care. Only a licensed physician is qualified in diagnosing the presence of mesothelioma and an appropriate treatment regimen. Your doctor will complete an evaluation, review your medical and work history, and identify any areas where abnormalities and disease are present.
Seek compensation If after seeking medical assistance you are diagnosed with mesothelioma then you may be entitled to compensation. If the asbestos exposure occurred at your workplace then you may be able to file a workers compensation claim. If the exposure occurred outside your job then you may still be able to file a personal injury claim. The effects of mesothelioma on your life can be hard hitting and will require financial support that you may be entitled to under the statues of the law. Don't let mesothelioma take control of your life; seek legal assistance in filing your workers compensation or personal injury claim.
Tips to Find Mesothelioma Attorney,

A person suffering from Mesothelioma needs legal support for getting compensation. There are many attorneys out there which can help a victim to obtain compensation from the manufacturers of the asbestos. Nowadays you can easily find specialized mesothelioma attorneys. They have lots of knowledge and experience in this field.
There are many things which an attorney can do for a patient and his relatives. Lawyers can help the victim not only in recovering the medical costs but also lost wages and punitive fees. It is a good idea to spend some time with the attorney before you decide something. The victim should share all his fears and expectations with a company representative.
Company providing legal support for the patient has contacts with medical as well as legal associations. You should always look for a company which is having a good reputation as well as work experience.
Do you know enough about Mesothelioma? It is one of the most destructive forms of cancers. It is mainly found in the people who are exposed to asbestos particles for a long time. Asbestos particles are very harmful for the organ systems of the human body.
There are two main types of this form of cancer. The first one is called benign and the second one is malignant. Malignant form is seen more commonly. The most common form of this disease is diffuse malignant pleural mesothelioma. Malignant form of the disease spreads very rapidly and can reach other organs and systems like heart and gastrointestinal tract.
The malignant form is not curable and the life expectancy of the patient diagnosed with mesothelioma is very less. The patient can live for several years if timely diagnosis is made. It is a good idea to visit a physician on the appearance of first symptoms. Person suffering from this form of this disease need professional care and emotional support.
If your loved one is diagnosed with mesothelioma then I would recommend you to look for proper medical and legal support.
There are many law firms which specialize in asbestos cancer. You should try your best to find an experienced and reputed attorney. You can find the lawyer with the help of yellow pages, online directories and related websites. It is a good idea to consult a friend or relative who had recently handled a case of asbestos cancer.
Finding a legal support is a bit difficult task but it can be easily done if you follow some tips and instructions which are stated in this article.
Mesothelioma Treatment Therapies (Conventional Therapies).

There are many types of treatment therapies available for mesothelioma, both conventional and experimental. This articles talks in details about the conventional therapies.
Conventional therapies available for mesothelomia include:
Surgery: Surgical treatment for mesothelomia may be done for one of the three reasons: for diagnostic reasons, to palliate pain and discomfort caused by tumor, or to cure. Diagnostic surgery is done in order to get mass sample (all or part) for biopsy. Palliative surgery, on the other hand, is done to remove diseased tissues or tumor that has spread beyond the mesothelioma. It is used also when patient is too ill to undergo any extensive treatment. Surgery for curative reasons is performed in cases where patient is in good health and cancer cells are still localized and can be easily removed. Generally, this condition is exhibited only when mesothelioma is still in stage I or II.
Chemotherapy is an aggressive form of treatment that involves use of drug to kill cancer cells in the entire body. The drugs are either administered intravenously or taken as a pill. Chemotherapy usually follows cancer surgery, and is used to kill cancer cells left behind by surgery.
On the downside, chemotherapy drugs also kill some healthy cells that grow as rapidly as the cancer cells. This in the well-known side effects associated with chemotherapy: hair loss, vomiting, loss of appetite, and nausea. Blood cell counts of patients may also be significantly reduced resulting in increased risk of infection, bleeding, loss of energy, and shortness of breath. Many of these side effects disappear once chemotherapy is stopped. Sometimes, chemotherapy is accompanied antiemetic drugs or treatment for side effects.
Radiotherapy or ionization therapy is use of high levels of ionized energy particles to kill cancer cells and contain their growth. This is also used following a surgery. Depending on their suitability, patients may need to undergo one or more types of radio therapy. In external radiation therapy, radiation beams from a machine are directed at cancerous areas to kill cancer cells. Brachetherapy involves the use of concentrated dose of radiation placed directly into the site of mesothelomia. This medical process kills tumors while doing little damage to surrounding tissues.

Caution - Mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma, a dangerous disease growing rapidly in the present generation.
What is mesothelioma? Mesolthelioma is a form of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is made up of tiny fibers, often used to make insulation in homes, schools and other buildings. This disease attacks the lining of the heart, lungs and abdomen.
Since asbestos can be found in basic building materials, those at risk for mesolthelioma are largely, but not limited to, construction workers who built our buildings through the seventies. The danger of using this natural occuring mineral was either unkonwn or ignored by health officals. One danger of the disease is that the symptoms are similar to those of general aging, and many people tend to ignore them until more severe, and potentially fatal symptoms occur.
There are several types of malignant mesothelioma.
Pleural Mesothelioma, or cancer of the lung lining, may cause shortness of breath, fluid build-up, chest pain, hoarseness, coughing up blood, muscle weakness, paralysis, sensory loss and swelling of the face and arms. There are two types of surgeries that are commonly performed to cure this disease, both of which involve removing portions of the lungs. The first operation is called a pleurectomy/decortication, which involves the removal of part of the lung lining in order to remove the tumor. The second surgery is called an extrapleural pneumonectomy. During this particular surgery, the lining, diaphragm, pericardium, and the whole lung may be removed in order to completely remove the tumor.
Peritoneal Mesothelioma, or cancer of the abdominal lining, can cause stomach pain, weight loss, nausea, vomiting, hernia, fluid in the abdominal cavity or a mass in the abdomen. A surgery known as a laparotomy may be performed during which the doctor will open up the abdomen to remove the entire tumor.
Pericardial Mesothelioma, or cancer of the heart lining, is very rare, but can cause shortness of breath and chest pain. A surgery called an extrapleural pneumonectomy can be preformed to remove the tumor.
With all Pericardial, Peritoneal and Pleural Mesothelioma, radiation treatments and chemotheraphy are also options. Today, the government has strict laws limiting and prohibiting the use of asbestos in building products. Removal of asbestos products from existing buildings is also heavily regulated.

Causes of Mesothelioma Cancer.

Mesothelioma cancer causing materials in the air around us? Mesothelioma is a deadly form of cancer which normally affects the lungs and stomach. Mesothelioma is a cancer that is typically caused by exposure to asbestos particles. These tiny particles are released into the air unseen and are transported directly to the lungs when normal breathing occurs.
This type of cancer is caused by asbestos dust exposure and can take up to 40 years after exposure to be diagnosed with mesothelioma. There are many products which were widely used in the past which contained asbestos materials:
- Pipe covering - insulations - brake pads - roofing materials
... and much much more. There is even speculation that certain cigarette companies used asbestos containing filters in the 50's which can cause cancer by themselves. Miners brought these deadly airborn fibers home unsuspectingly in their work clothes and exposure their loved ones.
There are many materials out there that contain asbestos or have not been removed safely. Could we be breathing these materials in when we shop in older malls or maybe there was asbestos insulation used in our attics of our clothes? We can only hope not! If we are breathing asbestos particles in we may not know for up to 40 years after exposure if we will be diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer.
Mesothelioma is typically a deadly form of cancer with limited treatment options for patients. There have been a few advances in cancer treatments over the years. However mesothelioma treatments are slow to emerge. There have been suggestions that a skin cancer cream used in combination with another cancer fighting drug may offers osme hope at least for mesothelioma cancer.
Mesothelioma and Asbestosis Hard to Diagnosis in Asbestos Exposed Smokers.

Mesothelioma and asbestosis, the scarring diseases caused from asbestos exposure, typically take years to fester within a body before symptoms become visible. Filling your lungs with smoke if you've been exposed to asbestos will hasten asbestos disease and expose you to additional medical testing to properly diagnose your disease. It will also take years off of your life.
Asbestos and smoke are a deadly combination that hastens the onset of painful and fatal lung cancers.
Lung diseases such as asbestosis, pulmonary fibrosis, pleural disease, lung cancer and mesothelioma are caused by asbestos. The symptoms of these asbestos caused diseases are so similar to the lung diseases and cancers caused by smoking, that proper diagnosis is difficult. Treatment for mesothelioma or other asbestos caused diseases begin too late because of earlier misdiagnosis. With most cancers, and mesothelioma treatment in particular, early diagnosis and treatment is crucial to survival. A late diagnosis and treatment of mesothelioma because an asbestos caused disease was mistaken for a smoking-related disease can take years off of your life, and lead to harsh and painful living during your last few years.
Medical research has also shown that smoking will hasten the attack of mesothelioma because of the internal damage caused by the toxic elements of cigarettes. Cigarette toxins eat away at your lungs. Asbestos fibers can then gain early entry into your vulnerable lungs and quickly take over or assist the cigarette toxins in creating your lung disease or cancer. Not smoking will not protect you from asbestos disease or mesothelioma, but it can reduce the severity and pain of mesothelioma and other asbestos caused diseases - and add years on to your life. If you don't smoke and you have had exposure to asbestos, diagnosis will be swifter and you will be subject to less medical testing. Your chances of developing secondary lung diseases are substantially reduced.
Mesothelioma symptoms and lung disease symptoms from smoking typically both start with shortness of breath and trouble breathing. A productive cough typically follows, and the shortness of breath and the productive cough slowly worsen and persist. Because mesothelioma symptoms progress slowly, there is time to make a proper diagnosis if early treatment is sought. If the symptoms are ignored and are merely accepted as a side-effect of smoking, the disease has more time to become uncontrollable, and the asbestos disease will soon have control over you.
Mesothelioma affects the lining of internal organs, in a membrane called the mesothelium - hence the cancer name mesothelioma. This membrane does not affect just your lungs, it can affect most of your internal organs. Once mesothelioma symptoms of the lungs surface, such as breathing difficulties and productive coughs, the next step is typically an attack around the heart. Mesothelioma symptoms will then include chest pain, along with respiratory problems. This too can be misinterpreted as a sign of a smoking related disease, or a sign of old age or other heart and lung ailments. Mesothelioma is rare, and doctors will test according to the most likely disease to occur based on the symptoms. Because of that, it is very important to mention to your doctor your exposure to asbestos at your first visit.
Mesothelioma symptoms are slow to surface, and difficult to diagnose. Smoking while being exposed to asbestos will make proper diagnosis of mesothelioma difficult, and proper treatment may come too late to be of any benefit other than pain reduction and respiratory control. Mesothelioma is a cancer caused by asbestos, not cigarettes - but cigarettes will make your mesothelioma worse. Don't let the fibers of asbestos and the toxins of cigarettes team up on your lungs. Quit smoking and stay away from asbestos. If you must be exposed to asbestos, wear proper protection and don't smoke. Don't rush the disease, diagnose it. And you can't diagnose the disease fast enough unless you quit smoking.

Are you one of the unfortunate workers who were exposed to asbestos in the workplace and have now been diagnosed with mesothelioma? If you are, you need to know your rights and consult with a mesothelioma cancer lawyer who can get you the restitution you both need and deserve. Mesothelioma is a devastating form of lung cancer caused by exposure to asbestos, and it has the power to destroy the lives of the patient and other family members. If you're being faced with medical bills, emotional issues, and burning anger at a company that allowed this to happen to you, you aren't alone. This has happened to hundreds of workers, and many are taking steps to seek the financial support they are entitled to.
Some law firms specialize in nothing but mesothelioma cases. They have all of the legal know-how you'll need in order to get the medical and emotional support necessary to get you through this devastating time. Their job is to see that you get all of the assistance you must have in order to ensure a secure financial future. They have the expertise it will take to dig into the facts and get the information needed to convince the courts that your work environment was to blame for your health issues. Since you have to be able to prove this point in order to seek restitution, you'll need all the help a great mesothelioma cancer lawyer will be able to give you.
No one can blame you for your health problems. Even if you were aware that you were working in an environment where you were exposed to asbestos, you probably never knew how hazardous this material could be to your health. If you get a specialized mesothelioma cancer lawyer, though, one of the first things he's going to tell you is that your employer was well aware of the risk their employees were taking.
As early as the 1920s there was evidence pointing to the fact that exposure to asbestos was dangerous for employees. During the '30s and '40s, scientific links were developed between asbestos and cancer. Companies that used asbestos in their manufacturing processes received repeated warnings about the problems that asbestos could be causing for employees and advised to switch to one of the safer materials that were available.
It's hard to believe in a country that prides itself on the value it places on human life, but executives in these companies made the decision to keep using asbestos, because it meant bigger profits and more money in their pockets. The health of their employees took a back seat to their greed, a fact that the courts now look upon as totally unethical. They also withheld the information they had concerning the asbestos-cancer link from their employees who continued innocently working in dangerous environments. Therefore, the bad decisions made by these heartless employers are being blamed for the suffering of their employees who contracted mesothelioma. Things could have been much different if they had only acted responsibly.
What the company you worked for has done to you is nothing short of criminal, and the legal system recognizes this fact. To go after your legal rights and the restitution you deserve, you're going to need a mesothelioma cancer lawyer who has the expertise to prove your claim. Some of the benefits you are entitled to include financial assistance to make up for lost wages, payment of medical bills that aren't covered by insurance, help in meeting funeral expenses, and emotional support for family members. Although your lawyer won't be able to get your health back for you, he can do a lot of things to make what you're going through easier for you, including providing your family with the financial security it needs.
Why is Mesothelioma So Deadly?

Mesothelioma, cancer of the mesothelium, is caused by exposure to asbestos. The disease can take decades to appear or to develop to the point that it is detectable. Once it forms, it takes time for the disease to be diagnosed and then treated. So why, exactly, is it so deadly?
One of the biggest problems with the disease is that it takes what seems like forever, to those who have been exposed to asbestos, to show up in tests. The disease usually takes around 20 years to develop but has been known to wait around 40 years to develop. What this means is that a person who knows he or she has been exposed to asbestos can wait a long time before a test shows anything either abnormal or serious.
This long period of inactivity means that individuals who do not know that they have been exposed to asbestos may ignore early signs and symptoms of the disease and explain them away as bronchitis or something else that will go away with time. This means that by the time they go see a doctor because they feel awful and can't breathe very well, the disease has progressed to the later stages.
Like all cancer, there is something very important in treatment about catching the disease early and getting treatment started as soon as possible. When a cancer is detected early and then treated early, the chances that it will be cured and the person's life saved go up drastically. The later cancer is detected in a person, the lower, usually, his or her chances of survival are.
Part of this is due to cancer's very aggressive nature. The unregulated growth of cancerous cells can quickly take over. Worse, in cancers located near major blood supplies or other fluid systems within the body, these cells can break away from the pack and end up halfway across the body and start a new colony.
Because most mesothelioma patients wait to see a doctor until they are having serious problems, they put themselves at risk and lower the chances that there is any hope for treatment. By the time most people go to see the doctor, the cancer has gotten to the point that it is inoperable. Chemotherapy and radiation can only do so much to kill cancer.
